Sometimes physiotherapy, IMS, chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, exercise, yoga, pilates…are just not enough pain relief – or it’s only temporary relief. In some cases, injections can be helpful to help reduce or manage pain.
There are a variety of injections available depending on your injury including the following:
Hydrodissection - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, nerves and other conditions
Hydrodilatation - Frozen Shoulder
Cortisone
Trigger point injections (muscle)
Botox
It is important to note, that not all injuries or pain are appropriate for injections. However, I have been doing assessments for injections for 20 years. It is the manual therapy (hands on) assessment along with a detailed history of your injury and what you’ve already tried that help determine whether you may be a good candidate for an injection.
Since I do not provide the injections, my role is to do the detailed manual assessment to see if you are a good candidate and also what specific areas are most likely to benefit from an injection. I then either write a letter to your doctor about my findings so that he/she can do an appropriate referral if they deem it to be appropriate, or in the case of prolotherapy and PRP, I can send a letter directly to the medical professional for a consult (while also keeping your family doctor informed of the treatment plan).
Assessments by a physiotherapist to see if you are appropriate for an injection referral, does not mean you will get injections. I facilitate the referrals to the appropriate medical professionals and then further discussion between you and those specialists is imperative before moving forward with an injection.
